When I was a teenager I longed for a film I could truly relate to. Over a decade later, I am finally ready to make that film. Complicated and confusing sexual violence is a common experience among teenagers and yet as a society we have not really figured out how to talk about it. Unicorns will be successful if isolated teenagers across the country are able to see and relate to it. By validating their experiences, this film can be the beginning of an important conversation about sex, love and violence against women. I hope to both enlighten audiences unfamiliar with teen dating violence as well as make something meaningful for those already affected. I hope to provoke dialogue about the nuances of teen dating violence and the resulting emotional confusion for both genders. Similarly, I hope audience members who have dealt with disability or illness in their families will feel less alone upon watching this film.
